The Mack Center on Mental Health and Social Conflict is a subdivision of Risk-Resilience lab. Our Mack Center work recognizes that individual and structural factors influence peoples’ risk of violence and other criminal behavior—and the viability and effectiveness of alternative policy solutions. Our current Mack Center projects are designed to promote effective and equitable justice.
When Dr. Harry Specht became Dean of the School of Social Welfare at the University of California, Berkeley in 1977, only one of some 200 students in the school’s Master of Social Work (MSW) program was performing field work in a public social service agency. Most were training to be clinicians, with many intending to become private practitioners.
The Doctoral Program of the Department of Social Welfare provides various sources of financial aid, including fellowships, tuition waivers, research and teaching assistantships, and training grants. The basic financial aid package for all new students accepted into the program consists of tuition coverage and at least two years of stipend support. Additional funding is possible after year two.

Apply advanced methodology to research projects in environmental health sciences and develop new research methods to address environmental health problems. Develop and demonstrate written and oral communications skills by preparing papers, summaries, briefings and presentations regarding environmental health science.
Epidemiology is concerned with the study of factors that determine the distribution of health and disease in human populations. The purposes of epidemiological research are to discover the causes of disease, to advance and evaluate methods of disease prevention, and to aid in planning and evaluating the effectiveness of public health programs.
